The movie
Blackboard Jungle is a 1955 American social drama film. Richard Brooks directed it.
Glenn Ford, Anne Francis, Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow play the main characters.
The film is remembered for its innovative use of rock and roll music. In fact, Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets introduces the film.
World War II veteran Richard Dadier (played by Ford) takes a teaching position in a mid-1950s violent and unruly New York school for boys.
The class includes Miller (played by Poitier) and Artie West, a gang leader (played by Morrow). The whole class show no respect for Didier (as well as for the other teachers).
Yet, Dadier is determined to do his job, despite resistance from students.
The scene
When Dadier observes West openly copying from another student, he demands that West bring his paper to him. Then, a conflict begins, which escalates very quickly. West pulls out a switchblade.
This is one of the most realistic scenes in cinema, which eventually leads to the resolution of the tension.
Thus, the ending is quite optimistic.
Blackboard Jungle led to the creation of other films, showing the revolutionary attitude of youngsters during the 1950s and 1960s.
It is a film really worthy for any cinephile’s library.
