Dr. Zhivago is a 1965 epic historical romance film. David Lean directed it. Robert Bolt wrote the screenplay, which was based on Boris Pasternak’s 1957 novel.
The story is set in Russia during World War I and the Russian Civil War. It describes the fate of a nonconformist physician and poet, whose life is altered by the Russian Revolution.
Omar Sharif plays the title role. Julie Christie stars as his lover (Lara Antipova).
In supporting roles there are Geraldine Chaplin, Tom Courtenay, Rod Steiger, Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir Alec Guinness.
The performance of all of the above is extraordinary. The stunning visuals of Lean’s picture and the unfolding of the story both leave the spectator breathless.
But above all, it is the Maurice Jarre’s score and the balalaika melody, which flows through the film. It makes the original sentiments you get unforgetable.
At the 38th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for ten Oscars (including the one for Best Picture). It won five (Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography, Art Direction, and Costume Design).
The film is a must for any cinephile’s library.
