Fame of actors and actresses

In  previous posts I used the Ngram tool to identify the fame level of several actors and actresses.

The unit of fame is the famon (= 1/1 000 000 relative % Ngram frequency).

Marylin Monroe and John Wayne are still at the top

Previous uses of the Ngram tool showed the fame levels (in famons) of the following actors and actresses:

Frank Sinatra, Woody Allen, Meryl Streep and others

Here I use Ngram to identify the fame of the following talented Hollywood icons:

  • Frank Sinatra
  • Woody Allen
  • Mia Farrow
  • Meryl Streep
  • Elizabeth Taylor
  • Dean Martin
  • Kirk Douglas
  • Diane Keaton
  • Lee Marvin.

Among them Sinatra and Martin are also famous singers whereas Allen is a multitalented musician, actor, director and author. With the exception of Martin and Farrow, all remaining seven actresses and actors have received Oscar awards.

Allen has won four Academy awards, 3 for best original screenplay and 1 for best director. He has also been implicated by Mia Farrow into the me-too movement. Overall, Allen has 24 nominations.

Streep has won three Oscars for best actress (and has overall 21 nominations).

Taylor has been the winner of two Oscars for best actress.

Marvin and Keaton have won an Oscar for best actor and  best actress, respectively.

Sinatra has one Oscar for best supporting actor and one Academy honorary award. Finally,  Douglas has one academy Honorary Award.

From the Ngram graph we can see that the names of all actress and actors appear in the electronic books after their first work. The only exception was Dean Martin and Elizabeth Taylor.

Martin’s name appears in the electronic books much earlier than his first movie, in 1949, or his first single in 1948. These appearances in the books refer to Everett Dean Martin (1980-1941) who was an American Minister, writer, journalist, instructor and lecturer. Thus, part of Dean Martin’s fame is attributed to the Minister Martin.

Taylor’s name also appears in the books much earlier than her first movie, 1943, and is attributed to various Elizabeth Taylors including Elizabeth Taylor the novelist (1913-1975). Thus part of her fame is attributed to the women of same name.

The analysis showed that Sinatra ranks third, among all actors/actresses checked so far, with 48 famons,  closely following Monroe and Wayne.

Allen ranks so far fourth, with 34 famons, after Sinatra. They both also had a relationship with Farrow.

Taylor attains fame levels similar to those of James Dean, 22 famons. Finally, the remaining actors and actress have fame levels ranging from 5 to 15 famons.

Thus, Marylin Monroe and John Wayne are still on top of the fame list.

Will there be a change in the top of the list? Who knows…

Be tuned!
