The movie
A Night at the Opera is a 1935 American comedy film. Sam Wood directed it. The actors are the Marx Brothers, and featuring Margaret Dumont and Sig Ruman.
The Marx Brothers was an American comedy group. They used anarchic humor, rapid-fire wordplay and visual gags. They achieved success in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in 14 motion pictures. The core group involved Chico Marx, Harpo Marx and Groucho Marx.
Earlier in their career, the Marx brothers were joined by their younger brothers Gummo and Zeppo. They are among the greatest and most influential comedians of the 20th century.
The picture begins with a scene at a restaurant in Milan, Italy. Otis B. Driftwood (played by Groucho Marx), the business manager of the wealthy widow Mrs Claypool (played by Dumont), has arranged to introduce her to Herman Gottlieb (played by Ruman), the director of the New York Opera Company, so that she invests $200.000 in the Opera Company.
Soon, Driftwood, Mrs. Claypool, Gottlieb and others, including a famous Italian tenor and a soprano set sail from Italy to New York aboard an ocean liner.
Driftwood arranges a rendezvous with Mrs Claypool in his stateroom, which then finds how small it is. On top of that, he finds three stowaways (including Chico and Harpo) in his room, who insist to eat before leaving.
The scene
Driftwood calls a steward and starts to order dinner, including almost everything. At the same time a parade of people walk in the stateroom either to perform their regular duties or to use the room. At the end, four waiters with trays enter the room!
All of them tumble out into the hallway when Mrs.Claypool opens the door.
This scene remains one of the most hilarious in the cinema history.
A Night at the Opera certainly deserves a leading place in any cinephile library.
