The different parts of our home cinema setup are connected to each other with cables.
Several years ago there were different video and audio cables available:
- Composite video cables
- DVI cables
- Coaxial video cables
- Component video cables
- Stereo RCA cables
- Coax digital S/PDIF cables
- Optical cables
- HDMI
- Speaker cable.
Today a home cinema setup needs only HDMI 2.1 cables, speaker wire for connecting the speakers to the AV receiver and stereo RCA cable for connecting the subwoofers to the AV receiver.
There are many different brands of all these three types of cables and their price ranges considerably, from cheap to very expensive. For instance HDMI and speaker cables can be as expensive as several thousands of euros/dollars.
Do not spend a lot of money on cables. Never spend more than 5% of the value of the home cinema system. Just search the internet, read the reviews and find the best offers. Keep in mind that:
- HDMI cables must be capable of transmitting 8K
- thicker speaker wires (gauge 12, 14) are better for longer setups, and high power usage, and low impedance systems and thinner wires (16 or 18 gauge) are better for distances less than 50ft.
