Giorgio Armani, the king of fashion, died few days ago. He reformed men fashion. And certainly his career is connected to the career of Richard Gere. through one iconic collaboration: American Gigolo (1980)
Giorgio Armani designed Gere’s wardrobe for the film. And Armani became a household name.
Paul Schrader wrote and directed American Gigolo. The protagonists are all magnificent.
Richard Gere is a highly paid escort in Los Angeles. He is romantically involved with Lauren Hutton, the wife of a politician. Hutton falls deeply in love with Gere.
Gere is also the prime suspect for the murder of a rich married woman. Bill Duke is the bad guy. And Héctor Elizondo shines as the policeman running after Gere.
Elizondo later collaborated again with Gere in the iconic romantic comedy Pretty Women. He also shined there.
You can watch American Gigolo again and again. The plot slowly unfolds and Los Angeles is the perfect scenery. Gere is a joy to the eyes dressed by Giorgio Armani .
American Gigolo certainly deserves a place in any cinephile library.
