The movie

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a 1966 western movie directed by Sergio Leone. The cast includes Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef.

The film is listed as one of the 100 best films of all times. It is the most iconic film of the so-called spaghetti Western genre.

The story takes place in the American Southwest during the Civil War in 1862. First, we see Tuco Ramirez, a Mexican bandit  – “the Ugly” (played by Eli Wallach), escaping by three bounty hunters. He kills them all.

Later, “Angel Eyes”, the Bad” (played by Lee Van Cleef), interrogates a former Confederate soldier about a cache of stolen Confederate gold. He kills the soldier and another man. He intends to find the stolen gold and keep it for himself.

Afterwards, we see another character, “Blondie”, “the Good” (played by Clint Eastwood), who firstly delivers Tuco to a sheriff and collects the bounty. When Tuco is to be hanged, Blondie saves him by shooting the noose. Blondie and Tuco escape and repeat the process in other towns. Soon, they both learn about the same story of the stolen gold.

The scene

After a lot of adventurous scenes, the three men have arrived to a cemetery. They have learned that the gold is buried in a grave. They have to kill or be killed to claim the gold each for his own part.

The three men stand around waiting for one of them to draw his pistol. Angel eyes draws first and Blondie kills him. Tuco discovers that his gun is unloaded (previously by Blondie), who orders Tuco to dig up the grave marked “Unknown”.

After finding the gold, Blondie forces Tuco to stand atop an unsteady grave marker while Blondie takes half of the gold and rides away. From a distance, Blondie with a rifle shot severs the rope and Tuco drops onto the gold.

The scene is accompanied by the  “The Trio”, an epic musical theme composed by Ennio Morricone.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly certainly deserves a leading place in any cinephile library.
