Frederic Briand

Frederic Briand is a respected marine scientist. He holds a Ph.D. (1974) from the University of California and contributed pioneering publications on the architecture and complexity of food webs. After leading UNESCO programs in north Africa, he served as Director General of CIESM, the Mediterranean Science Commission (www.ciesm.org) from 1991 to 2023. He is the founding Editor of the CIESM Research Monographs series, Marine Policy series and Exotic Atlas collection. He also served for 20 years as Whaling Commissioner to the IWC.
