Yes, there is no doubt: the action movies of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s are all Oscar candidates when compared to most of the present day action movies.

Compare, for instance, Black Rain, The Predator, Die Hard, The Rock, Conair, Breathless, Marathon Man, to name a few, with recent Marvel action movies.
Yes, sure, special effects and technology make recent movies more spectacular. Yet, they are not more pleasant to the eye.
They feel like videoclips. They are full of fast pointless action to the point that it is hard sometimes to watch it.

And the scripts lag far behind those of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Why? Simply because special effects don’t need a good script.
And the script is the backbone of a movie. Because as Alfred Hitchcock used to say the best components of a great movie is the script, the script and the script.

We strongly need a reorientation of the action movie industry. Lets go back to the roots.
